Chicago Education

The Chicago education system is one that is admired by many other cities around the world. Chicago is home to some of the finest public and private schools in the nation as well as some of the nation’s most well respected colleges.

Public Schools

As of data collected in 2004, there were a total of 602 public schools in the Chicago area which enrolled 438,589 students. 19,527 of the students were pre-schoolers, 2,261 were special education students, 31,655 were kindergarten students, 284,082 were elementary students, and 101,04 were high school students.

Private Colleges

There are many private colleges in the Chicago area. The five private colleges with the largest enrollments are typically DePaul University, Northwestern University, Loyola University of Chicago, University of Chicago, and Columbia College. Depaul has an enrollment of nearly 20,000 students, while Northwestern has an enrollment of 17,000 students. Loyola University of Chicago has an enrollment of 12,500, while the University of Chicago and Columbia University have enrollments of 12,500 and 9,000, respectively.

Public Colleges

The top five largest public colleges in the Chicago area are the University of Illinois at Chicago, Harry S. Truman College, Wilbur Wright College, Northeastern Illinois University, and Governors State University. The University of Illinois at Chicago enjoys an annual enrollment of 25,000 students, while Harry S. Truman College has an enrollment of 14,000 students. Wilbur Wright College, Northeastern Illinois University, and Governors State University all have enrollments of over 8,500 students.

Business Schools

Chicago is home to two of the nation’s top business schools as ranked by the United States News and World Report in 2004. Northwestern and the University of Illinois are ranked number five and seven in the prestigious rankings. The top three positions belong to Harvard University, Stanford University, and the University of Pennsylvania. This puts the two Chicago business schools in excellent company and illustrates why Chicago is one of the leading cities in American business.

Executive MBA Programs

Chicago was home to the number one executive MBA program in the country in 2004. This distinct honor went to Northwestern University. However, Northwestern was not alone in the top of the rankings as the University of Chicago joined Northwestern by having the fifth best ranked executive business program in the United States.
