Getting Around Chicago

Chicago residents and tourists have a host of transportation options at their disposal. There are airports, buses, trains, and automobile services that can be used to get around the city as well as get into and out of Chicago and its suburbs. Should a tourist or resident have an accident or other health problem while visiting the city, there are a slew of hospitals and emergency plans that are available to help make Chicago a safer and healthier city.

Airports

Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is easily one of the busiest airports in the nation. O’Hare handles well over 60,000,000 domestic passengers, annually, along with another 9,000,000 international passengers. Midway airport is another large air travel complex in the Chicago area. Midway typically handles close to 18,500,000 domestic passengers, as well as 228,000 international travelers.

Automobiles

According to statistics from the city of Chicago, there are well over 1,000,000 cars and taxis that regularly race up and down the roadways of Chicago. There are another 26,000 tractor trailers and semis along with 15,000 motorcycles. These automobiles traverse an estimated 3,775 miles of Chicago roadways lit at night by 173,700 street lights, and counting. Tourists must be constantly mindful to make sure that they do not turn the wrong way down one of Chicago’s estimated 1,300 one-way streets. Also, every year the city estimates that there are well over 130,000 vehicles that are towed due to parking violations and another nearly 30,000 vehicles towed due to abandonment.

Buses and Trains

The Chicago Amtrak railroad terminal generally claims that nearly 2,000,000 passengers get on and off its trains each year. The Greyhound bus terminal in Chicago is ranked as the fifth most used in the nation behind those of New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. Recent statistics report that many people used the Chicago Transit Authority, or CTA, buses and rails, along with the Metra rail and PACE bus service for intercity travel. Statistics show that the CTA buses handle 25 million riders per month while the CTA rail handles 12 million riders per month. The Metra rail has approximately 6.4 million riders per moth and the PACE bus handles an estimated 2.4 million passengers per month.
