The City of Chicago is a major metropolitan market and must, therefore, have multiple media sources to keep up with consumer demand. There are many television and radio stations in combination with newspapers that are part of Chicago’s mass media.

Television

There are 15 broadcast television stations in Chicago. These stations include large network affiliates such as WLS-7 (ABC), WMAQ-5 (NBA), WBBM-2 (CBS), and WFLD-32 (FOX). Smaller stations are also present such as WGN-9 (WB), WTTW-11 (PBS), WFTB-23 (WFTB), WCPX-38 (PAX), and WPWR-50 (UPN). Various other smaller stations round out the television broadcast market in Chicago.

Periodicals

There are many Chicago periodicals that circulate in Chicago and keep readers informed as to local, national, and international events and happenings. These periodicals include Bar Fly, Chicago Computer Guide, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, Chicago Educator, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Parent, Chicago Reporter, Chicago Reader, and New City just to name a few.

Newspapers

The newspaper industry in Chicago is famous for its credibility and outstanding reporting. Some of the most talented writers in the country grace the pages of the Chicago newspapers, such as those found at the Chicago Tribune. The Chicago Tribune is considered the leading newspaper with a circulation of nearly 700,000 customers. The Chicago Sun-Times and the Daily Herald come in second and third, respectively, with circulations of 500,000 and 148,000. Daily Southtown and the Chicago Daily Defender round out the top five newspapers with circulations of 57,000 and 33,000, respectively. Other Chicago newspapers focus more on ethnic issues and community matters. Newspapers such as Ashburn Independent, Austin Weekly News, Beverly Review, Clear Ridge Reporter, Greek Star, Korean News, La Raza, Near West Gazette, North Loop News, Tri-City Journal, and Hoy, fall into the categories of non-mainstream newspapers in the Chicago area.

Other News Providers

If information cannot be found in via Chicago’s many periodicals, newspapers or television stations, the city offers a multitude of other media outlets to the public. These sources include the Associated Press, Copely News Service, Feely News Bureau, Illinois News Network, Knight-Ridder News Network, KRF Global News, and Medill News Service. Others such as Tribune Media Services, Tribnet, and United Press International also serve as additional media outlets to Chicago.
